July 3: On to Rock Creek

Another big hill first thing in the morning. Urgh. The top near Eholt was a nightmare due to masses of sand all across the road which were whipped up into choking clouds by the busy traffic. All least it marked the end of major climbing. More fun downhill all the way into Greenwood where people had a rest stop at the Copper Eagle cafe and a little walk around the pretty historic town.

The onward trip through Midway to Rock Creek was increasingly hot and no one relished the idea of another 6K steep climb to our intended campsite in Johnstone Creek Park. At one point we couldn’t resist ducking under some sprinklers we saw by the road. Fortunately the folks at Rock Creek Centre gas station and store said we could camp in the picnic ground out back (for a discount - thank you!) so the rest of the afternoon was spent cooling off in the cold creek.
