July 1: The Big Hill

A fantastic breakfast was put on for us by the Kinnaird Community Church including great vegetarian options. Many thanks to Cyndie and others at the church for their generosity! It was a great way to start a day that we had been dreading a bit, as it involved 26 km of straight uphill to the Nancy Greene Provincial Park.

The local Shaw cable cameraperson leapfrogged ahead of us as we did the big climb. Although the hill appeared daunting to some in advance, everyone remarked on how relatively easy it had been. Fighting climate change can be like that. It looks really difficult before you start but it isn’t so hard when you just go out and do it! I hope we don’t miss the Shaw production because of being on the road.

Our ride was finished by noon so we had plenty of time to relax, explore and chat. By mid-afternoon we were getting worried about the fact that the support vehicles hadn’t shown up yet even though they would only have a short drive after some packing up and shopping. As it turned out we had underestimated the amount of work left to our support drivers and they spent a long time carrying heavy items and looking for assistance.

At the meeting in the evening it was resolved to not let that happen again. The day closed with everyone sharing a rose and a thorn from the day: something good and something not so good (if anything).

Rose and Thorn is a period of reflection in which we can discuss the beautiful part of our day and also the prickly frustrating part (and potentially greatest learning experience) that comes with most days
